A Group Committed to the Environment

S

ustainability is an integral part of the Mercedes Benz Group's sustainable business strategy, adopted in 2019 by the Board of Directors of Mercedes-Benz Group AG, with the approval of the Supervisory Board.

Through this strategy, the Mercedes-Benz Group takes into account regulatory requirements relevant to its business activities, as well as recognized international frameworks, external and internal stakeholder expectations, and global trends.

In addition, it periodically carries out materiality assessments in order to identify strategic areas of action. In this way, the Mercedes-Benz Group is also guided by the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in particular Goals 8 (Decent work and economic growth), 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), as well as Goals 11 (Sustainable cities and communities) and 13 (Climate action), in addition to those focused on areas where it can create added value, as it analyzes key areas of action with the participation of relevant stakeholder groups.

The automotive industry is currently witnessing a profound phase of transformation, and this is a process to which the Mercedes-Benz Group is actively contributing. In this regard, it has transformed its entire value chain into a value cycle covering the entire life cycle of the vehicle, from its development, to the supply chain, to production, to the use and disposal of vehicles. The goal? To avoid or minimize, as far as possible, the negative effects of its commercial activities while generating sustainable value from an economic, environmental and social point of view.

The Mercedes-Benz Group aims to steer the history of mobility in a positive direction, for which it has created a sustainability strategy.

Towards an all-electric future

The complete electrification of its product range is the most important lever for the Mercedes-Benz Group. Therefore, it is working to achieve net carbon neutrality at all stages of the value chain by 2039, as its goal remains to move towards an all-electric, software-based future.

The Mercedes-Benz Group has partially adjusted its targets and target corridors for electrification based on market conditions, with a focus on flexibility and the needs of its customers. In this regard, both Mercedes-Benz Vans and Mercedes-Benz Cars are taking the necessary steps to go fully electric, with customers and market conditions to set the pace for this transformation.

Minimum requirements for suppliers

In 2022 the Mercedes-Benz Group adopted the Responsible Sourcing Standard (RSS), a contractual document including all the necessary requirements that Mercedes-Benz Vans Group suppliers must meet in terms of sustainability. Its main objective is to ensure environmental protection, emphasizing the conservation of natural resources throughout the supply chain, the prevention of environmental damage caused by economic activities, and remedying such damage, if it occurs. If environmental damage is unavoidable or irreparable, it must be offset.

In this way, the Mercedes-Benz Group is increasing its sustainability requirements, especially in the areas of climate protection and resource conservation, as well as biodiversity, deforestation and water. In addition, the standards define minimum requirements with respect to Human Rights Due Diligence.
